Hydrophone

A2Z Energy Solutions, in collaboration with the Greek company HORST, is developing an innovative low-power hydrophone designed for long-term autonomous operation without compromising analytical accuracy. A2Z is responsible for the design and construction of the electronic components, while HORST is responsible for the hydrological aspect of the project. Part of the hydrophone’s development was funded by the European Union’s Horizon programme.

The hydrophone can identify and categorise sounds generated by weather phenomena such as rain and wind, earthquakes, marine mammals, vessels, and underwater noise pollution. It is designed for:

  • Environmental consulting companies, for recording underwater noise pollution and monitoring marine species.
  • Meteorological organisations and weather forecasting companies, for analysing weather phenomena through acoustic signals.
  • Geological and biological research centres and university laboratories, for studying seismic activity and marine life.
  • Maritime and navigation authorities, for detecting and classifying vessels and improving the safety of marine routes.

The two companies, A2Z and HORST, have manufactured and delivered:

  • 6 hydrophones for the University of Connecticut, USA, to be used for the detection and monitoring of marine mammals in the ocean, and
  • 4 specialised hydrophones for the Elementary Particle Physics Laboratory of the “DEMOKRITOS” Research Centre, to be used for the acoustic detection of elementary particles at a depth of 1,500 metres.

Further development of the hydrophone is ongoing and will include:

  • Networking of multiple units.
  • Integration of a navigation mechanism (drone).
  • Use of artificial intelligence, in collaboration with the University of Connecticut, for the automatic identification and classification of sounds.
  • Integration of 360-degree cameras.

Furthermore, in collaboration with the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR), we are developing a system for detecting radioactivity in marine environments, based on the hydrophone’s architecture and overall design.
